FAQ
What is the difference between binary (1024) and decimal (1000)?
Binary uses 1024 for each step (1 KB = 1024 bytes). Decimal uses 1000 (1 KB = 1000 bytes). Storage often uses decimal, while some software uses binary. Use the Unit dropdown to pick which convention you need.
How many bytes in a kilobyte?
In binary, 1 KB = 1024 bytes. In decimal, 1 KB = 1000 bytes.
Why does my 1 TB hard drive show less than 1 TB in Windows?
Hard drive manufacturers use decimal (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), but Windows displays size in binary (1 TB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes). A 1 TB drive shows as roughly 931 GB in Windows Explorer.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
MB (megabyte) typically means 1,000,000 bytes (decimal). MiB (mebibyte) always means 1,048,576 bytes (binary, 1024²). IEC standards introduced MiB/GiB/TiB to eliminate ambiguity.
What is the difference between bits and bytes?
1 byte = 8 bits. Network speeds are measured in bits per second (Mbps, Gbps), while file sizes are in bytes. A 100 Mbps connection can transfer about 12.5 MB per second.
How long does it take to download a 4 GB file on a 100 Mbps connection?
4 GB = 4 × 1024 × 8 = 32,768 Mb. At 100 Mbps: 32,768 ÷ 100 ≈ 327 seconds (about 5.5 minutes). Real speeds are lower due to overhead and latency.
How much RAM do I need for 4K video editing?
4K video editing typically requires 16–32 GB of RAM. A single uncompressed 4K frame is about 24 MB (3840 × 2160 × 3 bytes). At 24 fps, one second of raw 4K is around 576 MB.
What is a gigabyte of RAM vs a gigabyte of storage?
Both are the same amount of data (roughly 1 billion bytes), but RAM is volatile (loses data on power off), much faster, and more expensive per GB. Storage (SSD, HDD) is persistent and cheaper. The OS may display both in binary GiB.
How big is a typical photo, song, or movie file?
A JPEG photo is typically 2–8 MB. An MP3 song is 3–10 MB. A 1080p movie (compressed) is roughly 4–15 GB. A 4K Blu-ray movie can be 60–100 GB.
What are petabytes and exabytes?
1 petabyte (PB) = 1000 terabytes (decimal) = roughly 1 million GB. 1 exabyte (EB) = 1000 PB. Global internet traffic is measured in exabytes per month.
How many bytes is a single character of text?
In ASCII, 1 character = 1 byte. In UTF-8 (modern standard), English characters are 1 byte; accented characters 2 bytes; emoji 3–4 bytes. A typical novel (80,000 words) is about 500 KB as plain text.
